TORSDAG 13.10
Phillip Schjetlein Kvartett (Norge)
Philip Schjetlein – gitar / Adrian Waade – fiolin / Fredrik Luhr Dietrichson  kontrabass /Hans Hulbækmo – trommer

Kjempeband!…”

Reginfirra  (Island, Frankrike, Danmark)
Ingimar Andersen – saksofon / Kristján Tryggvi Martinsson – keyboard / Rune Lohse Sørensen – trommer /Guillaume Heurtebize – gitar

The Icelandic quartet Reginfirra was formed in the summer of 2009. The quartet received a grant from Reykjavík’s Cultural Fund in order to brighten up the city centre during the summertime. After a week or two of working on their compositions (but mainly fooling around and eating), Reginfirra began to appear frequently on the streets of Reykjavík, gradually imprinting their quirky tunes into the minds of tourists and pedestrians. The band also organized a few indoor concerts at local venues, where its dynamic material could be heard in proper acoustics. To make the summer even more memorable, the quartet participated in the Young Nordic Jazz Comets, held in Oslo in september, where it shared the first prize with the Trondheimian trio, PELbO. At this point the band members realized that they ought to bring their music to the masses, so they decided to record their first album. The album “Reginfirra” was released in august 2010 and got nominated as “Album of the year – Jazz” at the Icelandic Music Awards in 2011. Following the studio sessions Reginfirra toured through the Scandinavian countries during the Winter Jazz festival.

The hard-to-pronounce name of the band can be translated as „Absolute Nonsense“ and is probably most often used by Icelandic politicians when they want to express their disgust in a sophisticated way. Reginfirra’s music is no nonsense though, and while the band members may lack some sophistication on stage, they will hopefully not disgust you.

Kristján and Magnús are as well members of the acclaimed K Trio (winner of YNJC 2008).

Pantoum (Tyskland)
Inez Schaefer – vokal / Marius Moritz – piano / Christoph Hutter – bass / Katharina Lattke – drums

Lyrical, fascinating, intense.
Pantoum is a band that came out of nowhere and turned into something really special: An affecting repertoire with a lot of space for improvisation and energy, an own sound shaped by the unique voice of Inez Schaefer, a high aspiration of all playerd to have both, musical and personal togetherness and that all in one year.

The four young musicians met in October 2010 in Dresden when the semester began and their paths crossed. All of them study Jazz/Rock/Pop at Hochschule für Musik “Carl-Maria-von-Weber” Dresden. They began to play together, first with some Standards as “Take Five” and “Get Out Of Town” arranged by singer Inez and went on developing there own music mostly written by Inez or drummer Katharina. Past year the band had a few gigs all over Germany and travelled to the Czeck Republic. They are looking forward to play some concerts in Europe next year, but first stop will be Oslo, because drummer Katharina just moved and started her studies at “Norges Musikkhogskole”. Feels like this could be a good place for Pantoum.

In the beginning of August Pantoum recorded their first Demo-EP with 6 beautiful songs. Listen to it on www.soundclud.com/pantoummusic!

With the declared intention to share their music with as many people as possible Inez, Marius, Christoph and Katharina forget about borders and restrictions – neither between pop and jazz nor Germany and Norway – It ́s just about music!

FREDAG 14. 10
Sagstuen (Norge)

Ina Sagstuen – Vokal / Jan Klippen Hovland – Tangenter / Magnus Skavhaug Nergaard – bass /
Jan Martin Gismervik – trommer

Lars Fiil  Quartet (Danmark)
Lars Fiil – piano / Lis Kruse – saksofon / Jens Mikkel Madsen – bass / Andreas Skamby Madsen – trommer

The members in Lars Fiil Quartet joined forces in 2007 and after playing concerts all over the country, their career really took off when they won the prestigious Danish talent‐competition “Young Jazz” in April 2010. The victory led to some concerts abroad, amongst others Bohemia Jazzfest in the Czech Republic, and when they participated in the pan‐Scandinavian competition “Young Nordic Jazz Comets” in Helsinki in September 2010, their bass‐player was presented with the award for “Best Soloist”.

Immediately after this, the group took to the studio to record their debut album, and the result of their work is now to be heard on «Lars Fiil Quartet – Reconsideration». The album features 9 tracks composed by conductor and pianist Lars Fiil, which are inspired by both the alternative, experimental jazzscene and more Nordic, lyrical sounds. Besides being noticed by the critics, the record has also been played by the Danish and Swedish National Radio P2 and ukjazzradio.com. Aside from pianist Lars Fiil (25), the band, which met at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, consists of saxophonist Lis Kruse (26), double bass player Jens Mikkel Madsen (22) and drummer Andreas Skamby Madsen (23).

«The album, consisting entirely of compositions penned by the leader, shows a band whose understanding of the complexities of musical form belies its young age. While each of the members is certainly a highly skilled musician, instrumental prowess isn’t really the issue here. It’s about unfolding the melodic beauty of Fiil’s compositions, creating a mood and a sense of dynamics that ties the work together as a whole.» Allaboutjazz (USA)

«Reconsideration is a consummate debut from a group that at an early stage has developed their own sound carried by a pulsating and energetic Nordic melancholia” ”The quartet (…) works as a tight unit that in the best possible way presents the original material that has a distinct melancholic tone, but also a touch of unpredictable avantgarde dynamic…» Jazzspecial

LØRDAG 15.10
Vapaatie (Sverige, Finland, Norge, Østerrike)
Joonas Leppänen – trommer / Elias Stemeseder – keyboard / Otis Sandsjö – saksofon / Markus Pesonen – gitar / Ola Høyer – bass

“Vapaatie”  is a group of young musical nomads , whose paths crossed in Berlin in  the summer of 2011. Their take on contemporary jazz is a combination of instrumental storytelling of the American tradition mixed with the scandinavian mentality.

Vapaatie is a “Finglish” word used by the North-American Finnish nomads. It originates from the English word : “freeway”. “Finglish” is a mixture of American English and vernacular Finnish dialect from  the 19th century. It was spoken by the majority of Finnish immigrants , and will soon be extinct , because the Finnish Americans have stopped using it.

Isabel Sörling Group (Sverige)
Isabel Sörling – vokal / Kim Aksnes – trompet / Otis Sandsjö – saksofon / Henrik Magnusson – piano /
Alfred Lorinius – kontrabass / Carl-Johan Groth – trommer

Musikken deres kan man høre her!
