Do you play folk music or jazz and want to play with others across these genres? Are you between 17 and 25 years old? Then join the Interaction Seminar!
"The seminar will have a practical approach: we will play together as much as possible!
But what should we play when we have different reference material?
It might be a good idea to start by learning a melody and a jazz song to get a little insight into how the material in the different genres is structured. But the most important thing will be to create an interaction format that allows all musicians to reach their own musical reservoir and retrieve musical ideas from there. And that as quickly as possible.
After playing with interaction roles and guided tasks in ensemble teaching both in the jazz program at NTNU and the folk music program at NMH, I will use this as a methodological approach to quickly get into the interaction: Put small groups together and give them specific work instructions/role distribution. Those who do not play join in and listen and comment afterwards. Then we switch to new groups, etc.
These are specific tasks that will give the musicians attention to specific things they will work on, such as leading or following, so that the attention is directed towards the music and not towards what expectations one has of oneself or others regarding concepts such as improvisation, jazz, rhythm. The method will take into account the differences that lie in the different traditions, go into depth on the musical language, but also show genre independence in the musical research work itself.
This will be a type of research and teaching that examines the musical process more than it emphasizes the result, even though that will also be important in the long term." – Njål Ølnes
