Magnus Bakken at Galleri Zink 1:30 PM
Saxophonist Magnus Bakken is the Lillehammer musician who ventured out into the world and became a saxophone hero. He has made a strong mark on the Norwegian jazz scene, both with his own projects and as a collaborator in numerous bands and ensembles, from hard-swinging jazz to modern big bands. At Galleri Zink, he will hold a rare solo concert, surrounded by this year's festival exhibition. Here we meet Bakken as an improviser, in an intimate format where the music is shaped in direct dialogue with the room and the art on the walls. "I will try to draw some inspiration from the art there, it can be fun!" he says himself. It will be a very special concert experience where the moment sets the tone.
Andrew Lafkas at Oplandia Center for Contemporary Art 2:15 PM
The American bassist Andrew Lafkas has explored the many possibilities of improvisation for over 25 years. He has collaborated with numerous key performers in experimental and improvised music and is particularly known for his work with long-form structures and tonal textures on the double bass. After many years in Berlin, he took the step and moved to Murudalen(!) a couple of years ago, and this will be his first concert in Lillehammer. Here he will hold a solo concert where the focus is on presence: "I have been improvising with the double bass for the past 25+ years. For this concert, I plan to improvise for the duration of the set, about twenty minutes, being present to the sound, the instrument, the room, and us in it." The audience will experience a concentrated and meditative journey in sound – at the intersection of instrument, acoustics, and shared presence.
Galumphing Duo at Lillehammer Art Museum 3:00 PM
Galumphing Duo consists of South African Shannon Mowday (baritone sax, alto sax, bass sax, tubax & contra-alto clarinet) and Norwegian Jørgen Bjelkerud (trombone). Both are established musicians with long experience in both improvised music and composed projects. The duo balances between structure and spontaneity, building their expression on references from Bach and contrapuntal music, Nordic melody, as well as Mowday's deep roots in the South African rhythmic tradition. The name "Galumphing Duo" is taken from Stephen Nachmanovitch's book Free Play – a word that points to the tireless, curious, and playful energy we find in children and animals. This is the core of the duo's music: free expression in a complex landscape between written and improvised material, between intention and spontaneity.
Each concert lasts about 20 minutes, and the audience also has the opportunity to experience the exhibitions in the respective rooms. A big thank you to Galleri Zink, Oplandia Center for Contemporary Art, and Lillehammer Art Museum for their hospitality!
